The Italian Catholic Federation (I.C.F.) began in 1924 with 300 members in a San Francisco church in the Mission district.
Today, the I.C.F. spans five states, but its mission remains the same:
To encourage and promote faith renewal, apostolic and charitable works, and the preservation of the Italian-American heritage in our communities.
Many people ask if they must be of Italian lineage to participate in I.C.F. There is no requirement to be of Italian heritage – but you must be interested in embracing the Italian culture. For those who are Italian, I.C.F is a way to explore and connect their heritage with family and friends and recreate aspects of this unique culture – such as the passion for sharing food and enjoying warm conversations.
I.C.F supports a variety of programs both inside and beyond the St. Theresa Parish. Within our Branch #223, we give time and money to the church and school as well as conduct outreach to the broader community through scholarship contributions, “Gifts of Love” and apostolate charity.
“Gifts of Love” is a program that provides grants for the physically, mentally and/or developmentally disabled. These grants provide training, therapy and special equipment to assist in day to day life. The apostolate charity is supporting Oakland Children’s Hospital in their research in fighting Thalassemia (Cooley’s Anemia) -- a genetic disease that destroys the body’s ability to create enough red blood cells.
